Basque > Spanish sight translation in conference, institutional and judicial settings

Abstract

The subject of research for this article is Basque to Spanish sight translation. However, the analysis presented is not exhaustive; it constitutes simply a first step toward deeper research. According to several experts, sight translation is less frequent in other language combinations. Nevertheless, as this activity is regularly performed by Basque interpreters, the main aim of this paper is to describe this activity with reference to the answers provided by fourteen interpreters interviewed specifically for that purpose. Furthermore, this article seeks to determine whether it is necessary to incorporate sight translation as part of the syllabus for trainee interpreters and identifies a possible cause for the unusual frequency of this activity in the Basque Country.
