Materials for a comparative stylistic analysis of translation between Basque and Spanish: explanatory relative clauses in literary translations from Basque into Spanish
Abstract
The thesis entitled “Materials for a comparative stylistic analysis of translation between Basque and Spanish: explanatory relative clauses in literary translations from Basque into Spanish” analyses a corpus of literary translations from Basque into Spanish in order to determine how the explanatory relative clauses used in the translations were rendered in the original texts in order to identify norms of equivalence in translations between the two languages. For this purpose, an analysis was carried out on 10 subcorpora composed of selected binomials from narrative texts translated from Basque into Spanish in the last 40 years that can be considered representative of what could be called the syntactic stylistic devices of narrative in Basque. The statistical analysis in the thesis clearly shows the problems involved in explanatory relative clauses (with 45% of explanatory relative clauses using clauses that are paratactic or hypotactic rather than relative in the original text), as well as the considerable and harmful impact that antizeinism has had and continues to have on the syntax of the Basque language and, more specifically, on Basque literature.
