The use of “hi” in literature
This article provides an overview both of the use of the informal “hi” forms throughout the history of literature and of its current situation. The rules for the allocutive given by the Royal Academy of the Basque Language and guidelines for its use are also explained, focusing particularly on the practice of writers and translators. Additionally, various noteworthy explanations of the allocutive can be found in the Grammar published by the Academy and in the Standard Basque Handbook. Finally, the article discusses efforts being made by various parties in favor of the use of the allocutive, despite opposition from society.
