The adventures and misadventures of audiovisual translators
On November 15, 2024, the Association of Translators, Correctors and Interpreters of the Basque Language (Euskal Itzultzaile, Zuzentzaile eta Interpreteen Elkartea, EIZIE) hosted a discussion on “The adventures and misadventures of audiovisual translators” at the Lekuona Fabrika in Renteria. Translators Ion Zubizarreta, Maider Lizoain and Ane Garmendia talked about the nature of audiovisual translation. First, each of the translators explained his or her career and how he or she came to the world of audiovisuals. Then they discussed the disciplines that include audiovisual translation and their customers. The most discussed topic was the challenges, difficulties and demands faced by audiovisual translators, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of Basque translators. The translators also talked about the current situation of the Basque language in this field, with particular reference to the quantity and quality of content.
