Translating Proverbs from the 15th Century in the 21st Century: Proverbs in La Celestina in Basque
This article discusses various theoretical and practical aspects associated with the translation of proverbs and examines various collections of proverbs in Basque, some of which date from the same time period as La Celestina. It then considers various aspects of the undeniable challenge involved in translating for a 21st-century readership proverbs that may be more than five hundred years old. Next, in the form of a repertoire, it provides a list of most of the canonical and well-known proverbs in the work, together with their corresponding translations into Basque, in order to analyze the different procedures and techniques used by translator José Antonio Sarasola.
