Descriptive methodology applied to the audiovisual translation field: from the catalogue to the corpus

Abstract

This article shows the use of the methodology of Descriptive Translation Studies as the main backbone of the research carried out by the author on audiovisual translation into Basque. To do so, the article explains the different stages that the research has gone through in order to finally map the alien programmes of the first channel of the Basque public television ETB-1 broadcasted throughout the year 2006 and establish the textual corpus of audiovisual works that will be subject to the comparative analysis.

In order to draw up the map of audiovisual translation into Basque in the context of the first channel of the Basque public television, we have firstly proceeded to elaborate a computerised catalogue. To do so, we have designed a master form that will gather all the textual and contextual data under study. This master form works like a powerful database that will allow us to register, classify, analyse and inter-relate the data obtained.

This information, once it has been through several selection filters that have been established taking into account the regularities observed in the catalogue, will lead us to select a sufficiently representative sample of the phenomenon to be studied. Therefore, we can establish the parallel English-Basque bilingual corpus which will be object of a subsequent descriptive-comparative study.
