Basque literary works and their translations into Spanish in the cultural area of the Basque Country
Translation from a minority language to a more mainstream language allows original works to reach new readers as well as to expand into new markets. Furthermore, translation makes it possible to measure the quality of literature created in a minority language, and it can also become a necessary step for survival. On the other hand, translation into a hegemonic language may indicate dependence on that dominant language or a lack of autonomy, even though it could become an essential tool for relations with other cultures. In this article, we reflect on the place that Basque literary works and their translations into Spanish hold in the Basque Country, as they live side by side in the same area.
