Language policy and international audiovisuals: why we are in favor of dubbing
Itziar Diez de Ultzurrun Sagalà and Fermin Zabaltza Aleman

Summary

In this article, two Basque translators and Bascophiles present their concerns and reflections on the puzzling fact that those responsible for language policy in favor of the Basque language have not yet initiated a strong plan to dub international films and television series into Basque and promote the consumption of the dubbed versions. They consider dubbing into Basque to be the key to avoiding a return to the era of language replacement, and argue that the oral use of Basque and the consumption of Basque literature can be greatly strengthened by quality dubbing into Basque. Though we may sometimes forget it, they remind us that dubbing into Basque is protected by law in Europe, in the Spanish state and in the administrations of the Basque Country.
