The linguistic quality of Netflix subtitles in Basque
Summary
This article examines the linguistic quality of the subtitles in Basque provided by the Netflix platform, analyzing nine audiovisual texts subtitled by five translators. For this purpose, the linguistic errors in all the texts were identified and classified. The analysis demonstrates that there are certain errors that recur in all the texts. Thus, we can reasonably infer that we are facing a systemic problem, which leads us to wonder what criteria Netflix follows when assigning subtitling commissions. We conclude that, in order to improve the quality of subtitles in Basque, it is essential to implement appropriate control and review of the translations.
