Tailor-made translation
Abstract
This article aims at an analysis of translation based on comparison. For this purpose, the object of study is the set of poems by Louis Aragon published in 2019 as part of the Munduko Poesia Kaierak (World Poetry Notebooks) collection, in which is it noteworthy that the translator, Itziar Diez de Ultzurrun, maintains the rhythms and metrics of the original texts. This is precisely what the analysis is based on: an examination of what linguistic mechanisms and formal decisions are made to translate rhymes and metrics. Therefore, it is not the author’s literary work that is taken as the general context, but rather the reflections and decisions of the translators of previous translations into Basque of the same type. For this analysis, a representative part of each poem was selected and compared with the original version in order to determine what types of mechanisms and resources were used in the translations.
