Translating manga into Basque: challenges and decisions in a field (almost) without precedent
Iker Álvarez Castellanos

This article examines the main challenges of translating manga into Basque, based on the experience of the Kabe imprint published by Harriet Ediciones. It explains the main obstacles faced by the first Basque manga publications and also presents both the difficulties involved in translating Japanese registers, speech roles, dialects and onomatopoeias into Basque and the solutions for those difficulties. As a result, the Kabe imprint is approached as a project aimed at overcoming linguistic, sociolinguistic and structural obstacles that affect the production and continuity of entertainment content in Basque, rather than as simply a series of publications.
