The didactics of interpretation

Abstract

When talking about simultaneous translation or interpretation, it is necessary to distinguish two main kinds of activities of this kind: consecutive translation and simultaneous translation. In order to translate speech when the speaker has finished, apart from memory, it is necessary to learn to take down notes correctly and then to know how to read them and remake the speech.

Other skills must also be developed for simultaneous translation, and in both cases the source and target languages must be perfectly dominated, as simultaneity does not allow for dictionary use, as in written translation.

Finally, this paper deals with technique and skills which must be developed in order to carry out this sort of translation in a proficient manner.
