The Law in Basque: General Principles and Technique from the point of view of a Translator
Abstract
This article contains theoretical and practical meditations, from the point of view of a translator, on the use of Basque in Courts of Justice. Firstly, it succinctly attempts to establish the principles and characteristics of technical translation in general, and, more particularly, those of juridical translation. Special emphasis is applied on the need to develop juridical terminology in Basque, which would contribute towards homogenization of terminology and avoid a multiplicity of denominations for each concept.
The second part of the article refers to more practical affairs related to inherent difficulties in translating juridical texts into a language lacking in juridical tradition. Finally, in order to fill such a historical gap, the need for cooperation among all those who work in Basque within juridical spheres and a correct use of linguistic resources the language offers are emphasized.
