Destination Poland: First Station
In October of 2012, Aiora Jaka visited Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan as a guest of the faculty of lecturers in Basque and with the assistance of an Erasmus grant for professors of the University of the Basque Country. She offered various workshops and presentations for students of Basque and of translation; this work is a chronicle of her trip. But she also brought back from Poland a number of stories for children (though not only for children) that had been previously translated by Polish students of Basque. Stories by Maciej Wojtyszko are included, by means of which Wojtyszko, through the eyes of his character Bromba, observes the society around us critically and intelligently, but also imaginatively. Wojtyszko, who was born in 1946 in Warsaw, is not only a writer, but also a director and scriptwriter for film, television and the theater. He has worked in areas like animation, and in the field of literature is known for his children's literature. Bromba is surely his best known character, and it is in homage to this strange creature that the Brombaland Festival, a Polish festival of children's arts, has been held since 2007.
