Jone Aldamizetxebarria Leizaola, a lily in the desert
Jone Aldamizetxebarria Leizaola (Caracas, 1958) retired last year after working as a translator for the Barakaldo City Council for forty years. She started working while she was studying Sociology in Bilbao and she graduated in Basque Philology a few years later, but she always worked as a translator. She personally experienced the situation and evolution of both administrative translation and other areas of translation, as she was head secretary of the Association of Translators, Correctors and Interpreters of the Basque Language (Euskal Itzultzaile, Zuzentzaile eta Interpreteen Elkartea, EIZIE) for eight years (2005-2014). We read about the life of a municipal translator in her article “Barakaldo, desertua” (“Barakaldo, a desert”; Senez 46), and here she elaborates on this topic and gives us a broader view of the profession in conversation with a colleague who has been her friend and travel companion since their student days.
