Layers upon layers: Reflections on copy editing
Abstract
This article is a chronicle of a course on copy editing offered by EIZIE in San Sebastian in November of 2018 and taught by Berria copy editors Maialen Berasategi and Irene Arrarats. The course examined this type of work from a practical point of view, looking at the work conditions of copy editing, what elements should be present on the curriculum vitae of a copy editor, different copy editing processes, etc. In short, as the instructors noted during the course, the copy editor’s main tool is language itself, he or she must therefore have an extensive knowledge of the language, and the copy editor’s goal is always to find the balance between linguistic correction and the communicability of the text.
