Interview with Nami Kaneko
Elizabete Manterola

Abstract

In April of 2016, Nami Kaneko was awarded the Japanese Prize for Best Translation for her translation into Japanese of Kirmen Uribe's novel Mussche (What Makes the World Go Around ). It is wonderful to know that a work translated directly from Basque into Japanese has received such a significant award, and we sought an interview with the translator. Nami told us about how and why she began to study Basque, and shared the story of her professional development as a Basque-Japanese translator. Additionally, we discussed interesting topics such as Japanese literature, the literary interchange between the Basque and Japanese cultures, and translation from Basque and its promotion.
