Shakespeare, improvisor of verse: translation in verse
Abstract
Juan Garzia translated Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' into Basque as part of the Donostia / San Sebastian 2016 European Capital of Culture project. EIZIE organized various events to publicize the translation, including «Shakespeare, improvisor of verse», a talk given as part of the «Translator's Kitchen» workshop in which translation and the improvisation of verse come together. We address the following topics: the multidisciplinarity of translation and verse improvisation, the analogy and fusion of the two disciplines, translation exercises carried out by the workshop, the analysis and comparison of the exercises translated in verse, and reflection on the usefulness of verse improvisation in Basque translation.
