Barakaldo, desert
Jone Aldamiz-Etxebarria

Abstract

In this autobiographical article, Jose Aldamiz-Etxebarria reviews his 32 years on the city council of Barakaldo, in tasks related to the Basque language and translation. The revitalization of Basque and the language itself were rarely found in this city, and were more symbolic than anything else. Instead of serving as collaborator and facilitator, the city council seems to have acted as an obstructive element, and even though 18% of the population considers itself to be Basque speaking, for local politicians, Basque seems not to exist in that desert.
