Children's and Young People's Literature Translated from German into Basque
Naroa Zubillaga

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to summarize a doctoral thesis presented in 2013 on the translation into Basque of German children's and young people's literature. First, and following a descriptive methodology, we have created a catalog of all the relevant translations. Next, after establishing specific criteria, we select the texts that constitute the corpus with which we analyze the translations of certain elements of informal language: insults and curses, and some German modal particles. In conducting this analysis, we compare the results obtained in direct translation with those obtained in indirect translation, noting the amount of standardization and interference present in each type of translation. According to our findings, standardization is a quite general phenomenon, although it is found to a greater extent in indirect translation. Nevertheless, the dividing line between direct and indirect translation is not always clear.
