An Example of Indirect Translation: 'Na Drini ćuprija' by Ivo Andríc
Abstract
This article is a discourse on indirect translation, taking as a point of departure the process of translating into Basque the work of Ivo Andrić. Translation done through a so-called bridge language does not enjoy high status, nor does it attract academic research. Nevertheless, without it, it would be impossible to understand worldwide literary ebbs and flows; for example, the great 19th-century Russian novels were translated into other languages and cultures through their translation into French. Furthermore, many languages and cultures have no other available means of transmission to the rest of the world. The author of this article discusses various technical issues, problems, and solutions in this tour of the process of indirect translation of Na Drini ćuprija [The Bridge on the Drina].
