Seven notes on Dubbing for Television in Catalonia
Josep M. Carbó

Translation: Kristin Addis

The author offers seven very personal impressions of his experiences in dubbing for television. He first assesses the level of quality of the different professional positions that comprise the backbone of the dubbing industry. He then explains the development of the interaction between the translator and the linguistic consultant at Catalonian television (TVC, Televisió de Catalunya) and presents the paradoxes of the credibility of dubbing (a notion that is both essential and imprecise), the consequences of the lack of a linguistic fictional referent in the Catalan language, and the practical dilemmas of recreating youth slang.

Finally, he reflects on the standardization of terminology in a society that is more and more open to different linguistic influences, and on the defense mechanisms of the Catalan language in response to such influences.
