The translation of Euclid's «Elements»: a contribution to the standardization of Euskara in the field of mathematics
Abstract
In May 2005 we produced the first Basque translation of Euclid's Elements, published by Elhuyar. I, Patxi Angulo, took on the translation; J.R. Etxebarria took on the proofreading; and I was assisted by X. Artola. Elhuyar also assisted with their editorial opinion and proofreading. Javier Alonso and Cristina Lasa helped us with the Greek terms.
In this article we are setting out to link that translation with the standardization of Euskara. Specifically, we wish to show how the job of translating influences the standardization of Euskara. The book doesn't aspire to be anything more than a proposal for standardizing Euskara in the field of mathematics; specifically, as we have stated in the Introduction, the book is no more than one option amongst the possible translations.
In the first place, we'll give details of the translation. Then, we'll set out our contributions to the various aspects of standardization: firstly, we'll do a classification of terminology (well-known, modified, new terms, including the adapted terms and the terminological verbs of the text); next we'll describe the linguistic elements of the mathematical discourse; and, finally, we'll present the expressions. We'll present all the data in four languages, and we'll also detail where they appear for the first time. Finally, we'll present a few conclusions.
