Discursive creation in audiovisual translation: how to translate function
Josu Barambones

Abstract

This article addresses the study of discursive creation in audiovisual texts, with real-life examples from actual practice. The author carries out a descriptive study on the linguistic-textual norms present in the transfer of audiovisual texts. The technique of discursive creation is presented as an appropriate method of creating in the target culture translations that fulfil the same function and produce the same effect. To illustrate this point, the author uses real-life examples, which are then classified into two different groups. First, he analyzes what is known in the profession as the creation of environments or Ad-Libs. Second, he focuses on those cases in which the target text does not maintain the original meaning, but is limited to occupying a space or place that makes it possible to satisfy the restriction of isochrony. In conclusion, it is noted that linguistic transfer is not sufficient to reestablish the meaning of audiovisual texts in the target language.
