Abstract

CEATL, the European Council of Literary Translators' Associations, was created in 1983, to encourage collaboration and the exchange of information among European literary translators' associations, as well as to protect the economic, ethical and legal status of literary translators. Today CEATL consists of 26 member associations in 23 countries, and EIZIE (Euskal Itzultzaile, Zuzentzaile eta Interpreteen Elkartea; the Association of Translators, Correctors and Interpreters of the Basque Language) has been a member since 1993. Last year, a detailed analysis was carried out on data collected on the activities of literary translators in various European countries; the results made it clear that the working conditions of literary translators are very bad throughout all of Europe. In addition to dialogue with the European Commission, other actions are also being taken to improve the status and working conditions of literary translators.
