In pursuit of pearls: discriminatory language in the Elhuyar Dictionary
Eneko Sagarzazu Martinez

Summary

The Elhuyar Dictionary is among the most consulted linguistic resources in Basque (more than 6 million visits in 2022). In this paper we have analyzed the content of the Elhuyar Dictionary and identified traces of discriminatory language. We understand discriminatory language as expressions that denote any type of discrimination (gender, sexual orientation, race, disability...). In recent years, awareness of using non-sexist and inclusive language has spread, and as dictionaries should be a reflection of current language, the need to address this issue has also arisen in the dictionary. The first edition of the Elhuyar Dictionary was published in 1996, and although thousands of entries have been added and updated since then, we can find pearls that stand the test of time.
