Given that we are experiencing a tidal wave of artificial intelligence and automatic translation, it would be wise to consider the undertow. This article discusses some of the concerning consequences of the unrestricted spread of automatic translation, such as the damage inflicted on the quality of language by corpuses based on texts generated by automatic translation, the uncertain status of university studies of future translators, and the effect on people’s motivation to learn Basque, as well as issues such as the need to invest in tools to ensure language quality, and the responsibility of institutions and professionals.
