«In Spanish, please»: literary self-translation in the Basque Country; a global viewpoint
Abstract
Most research on self-translation generally focuses on pairs of dominant languages, but has little to say about asymmetrical relationships between languages. In approaching self-translation from the perspective of languages that occupy the same geographical space but have unequal status, as in the case of Basque, which coexists with two dominant languages (French or Spanish), the strengths and and limitations of a language or culture that is symbolically or socially dominated become clear. A brief theoretical analysis followed by a quantitative examination of the data provide a general overview of literary self-translation from Basque.
