Preliminary Norms for a Literary Canon of Works Translated into Basque
Manu López Gaseni

Abstract

In descriptive studies on literary translation, the term «preliminary norms» refers to the making of decisions prior to actual translation. This work studies such norms in the case of the three phases of the Universal Literature collection, and analyzes their importance in establishing a canon of literary works translated into Basque.

The first part of this work examines the preliminary norms of the aforementioned collection. After a brief history of the concept of a literary canon, the second part analyzes what type of canon is being constructed in the Basque literary system through the selection of works of universal literature.
