Abstract

The translator's job has undergone major changes in recent years as a result of new technology. I've been in the job for nearly 20 years and my current way of working bears no resemblance to when I started out. Then I worked with my desk piled high with dictionaries and I used a pencil and rubber in preference to a pen, so that I wouldn't have to cross anything out as I worked and therefore I wouldn't have the additional work of writing out a fair copy at the end. The first major change was brought about by computers, thanks to word processing software. The advent of computers was accompanied by special applications software: spellcheckers, electronic dictionaries and translation memories. The next major change was the Internet, which brings an impressive quantity of information within our reach.
