Xabier Mendiguren Bereziartu: pioneer, scholar, colleague
In the still-short history of Basque translation, Xabier Mendiguren Bereziartu worked in all areas: he launched the Martutene Translators’ School in 1980; he fostered the creation of the journal Senez and wrote for it for many years; he promoted the establishment of the Association of Translators, Correctors and Interpreters of the Basque Language (Euskal Itzultzaile, Zuzentzaile eta Interpreteen Elkartea, EIZIE) and did a lot of work for it in its early years; and finally, he was the first Basque interpreter, together with Pello Zabaleta. He always freely shared his scholarship, collaboration and friendship.
