Quantitative analysis of translations into Basque (2008-2018)

Iñigo Satrustegi Andrés

In this research, as the title suggests, we carried out a quantitative analysis of literary works translated into Basque between 2008 and 2018. We present this research as a continuation of the work done several years ago by Manu Lopez Gaseni, which served as our point of departure. Our intention was to analyze the current state of the system of literary translation into Basque, so that we could compare our results with those obtained by Lopez Gaseni and thus identify potential trends.

The analysis

The analysis was published in Basque in the 51st issue of Senez translation journal, and is structured as follows:

  1. Introduction
  2. Methodology
  3. Data analysis
  4. Appendixes

Appendix I (only in Basque): Complete tables of the monographs:
Languages of the originals; countries of the originals; translators and numbers of translations; list of publishers

Appendix II (only in Basque): Complete tables of the 'Others':
Languages of the originals; editors and formats; translators

Inventory of translations into Basque (2008-2018)

(Appendix III, only in Basque)

We created an inventory of works translated into Basque in the last 11 years.

These were the criteria we followed:

  • First of all, we separated the monographs from the rest of the publications.
  • In each one of them, we created a table according to literary genres.
  • In each table, we listed the literary works in alphabetical order by the surname of the authors.
  • We provided the following data about each book:
    • Author(s)
    • Title
    • Original's publication year
    • Original's language
    • Original's country*
    • Translation's publishing house
    • Translation's publication year
    • Translator

(*) We could not include this data in the works of the 'Others', since NdN does not provide this information.
