Theatrical Works on the Web in Basque

The Basque translations of a number of theatrical works can now be read on the web thanks to the electronic publication by Armiarma of previous issues of the journal Antzerti [Theater]. Antzerti was published at two different times (1932-1936 and 1982-1985) and is an invaluable historical resource both of Basque theater and of the translation of theatrical works

All of the issues of Antzerti from both periods of its publication are now available in both text and PDF formats through the Antzerti link of the Armiarma website; the works of a total of 47 authors can be found, more than a dozen of which have been translated into Basque. A total of 76 theatrical works have been compiled. The authors translated into Basque include classical writers (Euripides, Sophocles) as well as modern playwrights (Dario Fo, Alfonso Sastre), and it is noteworthy that, in the journal’s last two years of publication, translation was of primary importance. Because of this emphasis, many outstanding authors of universal literature were translated into Basque (Carlo Goldoni, Jean-Paul Sartre, William Shakespeare, Manuel Maria).

One of the advantages of the webpage is the option of searching by translator; the translators are listed alphabetically at itzultzaileak, each with links to his or her translated works.
